Database of Traditional Chinese Medical English version

TCMD-2013-Eng (Expanded English version of Traditional Chinese Medical Database)

Background:

The TCMD-2011-Eng (Traditional Chinese Medical Database, TCMD 2013-Eng) is a scientific database subject to intellectual property law. It contains detailed data and outlines the standard specifications of many traditional Chinese medicines, facilitating convenient searching. It may serve as a tool to support the research and development of new drugs and modern studies of the efficacy and mechanism of traditional Chinese medicines.
Supporting monographs in both Chinese and English have been published previously. These books can be used alongside the database to produce excellent results.

The Chinese monograph (3 volumes) — Chemical Components of Source Plants in Traditional Chinese Medicine (3 volumes) (ISBN978-7-03-023553-4) was published by the Science Press, Beijing, 2009.
English monograph (6 volumes) ─ Encyclopedia of Traditional Chinese Medicines Molecular Structures, Pharmacological Activities, Natural Sources, and Applications, Vol 1–Vol 6, ISBN978-3-642-16734-8) was published and issued worldwide by Springer, 2011.

Brief product introduction to TCMD-2013-Eng (features of the 2013 edition)

The database was developed over 15 years and its contents have been systematically verified by many rounds of information quality tests. The data are complete, standard, and reliable.

The number of original literature articles in English and Chinese included in the database has been increased to 5538, and the number of isolated and identified chemical components in traditional Chinese medicine has been increased to 23,033. In addition, the number of source plants and plants in same genus has been increased into 6926.

In total, 25,003 items of pharmacological activity data on nearly 8000 compounds were collected, all the results of in vivo and in vitro experiments.

A total of over 2000 items of reliable data on the content and isolation yield of more than 1000 compounds from nearly 500 common traditional Chinese medicine were collected.

Information on each compound includes a unique compound code, transliterated name, alternative English name, CAS accession number, molecular formula, molecular weight, physicochemical properties (crystal form, melting point, boiling point, and rotation, etc.), pharmacological activities, source plant list (containing content or yield data), reference list, and molecular structure with complete stereochemical information.

Source plants used in traditional Chinese medicine are all given in standard contemporary biology terms. Species are used as the basic units. The name of source plant is presented in a bundled fashion, as follows: PINYIN Name + simplified Latin Name, facilitating academic communications between international academic communities.

Scientific value and practicability of TCMD-2013

Information is complete and precise, and stereochemical assignments are given.

The biological activity of the compounds, and the effects, indications, and pharmacodynamics of the traditional Chinese medicines are all given with standard specifications. For example, CCC code with standard specifications of more than 200 cancer cells is used.

The international plant classification system is used to classify the source plants, facilitating smooth connections between the old traditional Chinese medical information system and the modern botanical classification system.

The database was installed on the universal platform ISISBase developed using MDL company, and is run in a Windows environment. This makes it easy to search, browse, and use. For example, its unique structure/substructure search function cannot be replaced by any book. The database can also connect with molecular design software, such as Tripos and Accelrys.

Functions and use of TCMD-2013-Eng

The database can be used for text and data searches using multiple approaches and has a search function based on two-dimensional stereochemical structure.

It is rich in data suitable for QSAR research.

It is suitable for use in integrated studies of modern traditional Chinese medicine.

It can be used to uncovering new clues that lead to development of innovated new Western medicine.

It can be used to develop new formulations and many other new TCM products from TCM source plants.

Three-dimensional structural database with single and multi conformations (stand-alone product)

TCMD-2011-3D-S, issued at the same time, is a single conformation three-dimensional structure database.

TCMD-2011-3D-M, ssued at the same time, is a multi-conformational three-dimensional structural database. The three-dimensional structure database can be used directly in drug design and in searches for three-dimensional structures based on pharmacophore or molecular docking.
